Biography
Ava Hsueh (also sometimes known as Ava Pao-Shia Hsueh, Xue Baoxia, Hsueh Pao-Shia, or Hsueh Pao-Hsia) was born in Taichung, Taiwan in 1956. After receiving her BA from the National Taiwan Normal University in 1980, she studied in the USA, and was awarded an MFA from the Pratt Institute in New York in 1986 and a doctorate from New York University in 1995. Hsueh is currently a professor in the Doctoral Program in Art Creation and Theory at Tainan National University of the Arts. Selected solo exhibitions include her major retrospective, ‘In Front of You’, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung (2016); ‘A Transit Survey-Solo Exhibition of Ava Hsueh’, Red Gold Fine Art, Taipei and ‘Mind Maps: 1989–2014 Abstract Art of Ava Hsueh’, InART Space, Tainan (both 2014); ‘Realm·Energy-2013 Solo Exhibition of Ava Hsueh’, Taitung Art Museum, Taitung (Taiwan); ‘Non-Zero Point: 2013 Abstract Art of Ava Hsueh’, Tina Keng Gallery, Taipei; ‘Abstract Art of Ava Hsueh’, Art Beijing, Beijing (all 2013); ‘Flowing Reality: 2011 Abstract Art of Ava Hsueh’, Shanghai Art Museum and National Art Museum of China, Beijing (2011 and 2012). Hsueh has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Taiwan, the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Korea, Australia, Italy, France and the United States.
