Notes
Deciphering Phenomenon (2015) evokes an aerial topography of complex tangled scribbly lines that dart and weave throughout the composition, an effect heightened by its earthy tones. The critic Hsiao Chong-Ray has posited that Hsueh’s childhood in Taitung, right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean plate, an area subject to a great deal of geological disturbance, is a clue to understanding her work. A metaphor for the fluid, ungraspable nature of Ava Hsueh’s paintings, this notion of a geological force-field of unpredictable movement suggests the essentially inward preoccupations of the artist, examining her inner world and charting its topography.
