Biography
Significant abstract painter Chu Teh-I was born in 1952, in Jeongeup, South Korea. He graduated from National Taiwan Normal University in 1976 and received diplomas from L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure Des Arts-Decoratifs De Paris in 1983 and L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts De Paris in 1984, having previously studied painting at the Lee Chun-shan studio. Chu has exerted a profound influence on art education in Taiwan, occupying diverse senior academic roles including serving as the Director of the School of Fine Arts, the Graduate Institute of Art History Program, and the International Exchange Center; Dean of the Office of Research and Development, Dean of the School of Film and New Media, and as Director of the Department of Animation at the Taipei National University of the Arts. He is currently the director of Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts as well as professor of the Department of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts. Chu is also a board member of the Lee Chun-shan Modern Painting Foundation. He was invited as a visiting scholar to the Australian National University, L'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts-Decoratifs de Paris, École Nationale Superieure d’Art de Bourges in France, Sungshin Women's University, Chonnam National University and Seoul National University in Korea, as well as Tokyo University of the Arts, Kyoto University of Art & Design in Japan and University of the Arts London in the UK. Chu has been involved with many public arts projects and the establishment of the Art Bank in Taiwan. His work has been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan, Korea and France, and his works are held in numerous private and public collections. Chu Teh-I lives and works in Taipei.
