Biography
Born in 1968 in Luoyang, Henan Province, Bai Yiluo is a self-taught artist who became celebrated for using discarded photographs to create astonishing installations, such as a ‘jade’ burial suit made of stitched-together identity photographs of random, anonymous Chinese citizens. His later sculptural works marry objects signifying Chinese tradition with the dislocation and anxiety of the contemporary world. With works shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Centre Pompidou, Beijing’s Today Art Museum and London’s Saatchi Gallery, and work exhibited in curated exhibitions across the globe, the significance of his photographic and installation practice is internationally recognised. Bai Yiluo lives and works in Beijing.
