Notes
Illumination references the disappearance of everyday objects that were once essential to every Chinese household: it presents the artist’s collection of dozens of rusty old oil lamps from all over China. This fairy-tale collection of artefacts, inviting an Aladdin-like meditation on wishes and dreams, speaks of obsolete technologies and simpler lives lost in the transition to modernity. From his memories of childhood in a country just emerging from the Cultural Revolution, and the monotony of his early life on the factory assembly line, Bai Yiluo has forged a sophisticated art practice that connects the past with the present day.
