Notes
Station (2011) represents an iconic Beijing bus stop, its routes and times defaced with stencilled and scrawled advertisements for the plethora of goods and services offered in the new Chinese economy of quick-witted entrepreneurs. The bus times are overlaid with phone numbers of real estate agents, tradesmen – and some offering services of a more personal nature. The routes listed on the bus stop are those Gao Rong used each day on her long journey to the art academy and home again; she travelled the congested roads of the city, crowded together with fellow commuters, in three different buses. Beyond the literal and the nostalgic, Station represents the artist’s trajectory, from rural China to the bright lights of Beijing.
