Ma Jiawei’s work reflects the constantly changing urban environment of Beijing and its surrounds. The focus of her mixed media canvases (often round, to create the illusion that we are peering through the giant concrete pipes used in constructing roads and highways) is on concrete, construction materials, traffic cones or the blue sheeting used in China to fence off the ubiquitous demolition and reconstruction sites.
