Emaciated yet apparently contented, two scrawny dogs stand on their hind legs, leaning on each other in an attitude of contentment and mutual interdependence. Like Chen Wenling’s anthropomorphic pigs, the dogs in this work represent people, perhaps the rural villagers of his childhood in a mountainous region of Fujian Province, where life was often hard and people depended on their family and community.
