Notes
In the globalising decade of this duo’s young adulthood China seemed to be set on fast-forward: economic reform brought dramatic social change and an influx of western influences. Their theme of ‘cultural collision’ challenges old divisions between east and west, traditional and modern, and hand-crafted versus machine-made. The symbols on these flags were created with pixel-like hand-carved seals, not with a paintbrush. Beneath the ‘brands’ of nationhood lie thousands of corporate logos: hidden within the Stars and Stripes are Chinese brands, and within the Chinese flag we find the familiar corporate monoliths of global trade.
