Notes
In the globalising decade of this duo’s young adulthood China seemed to be set on fast-forward: economic reform brought dramatic social change and an influx of western influences. From products to western celebrities, a tidal wave of global 'brands' entered the consciousness of Chinese citizens. The artists' theme of ‘cultural collision’ challenges old divisions between east and west, traditional and modern, and hand-crafted versus machine-made. The iconic symbol of Hollywood glamour, Audrey Hepburn, has been created with pixel-like hand-carved seals, not with a paintbrush. Her famous face, pixilated like a glitchy image file downloaded from the internet, is made up of corporate logos and symbols both Chinese and western, hiding in plain sight within the glittery surface of the painting. Stardom, it seems, is a global aspiration.
