Notes
Liu Wei generates the images for his paintings digitally, and after they are transferred to the canvas the colours are filled in by assistants working to his specifications. The artist says that these works are not so much oil paintings as deliberately meaningless images, randomly generated by the computer, his response to the notion of painting as a representation of the visible world in a society where images, constantly reproduced and recycled, have lost some of their power. The paintings may look mechanical, but there is an element of doubt, and a continual process of decision-making, as the assistants discuss each new colour and shape with Liu, and sometimes make changes throughout the process. In contrast to the hectic verticals of the Purple Air series, Yes, That's All 2 (2009) is sombre, even melancholy. Its dark horizontal bands are produced from images of television signals and screens undergoing disturbance, a metaphor for the unease and dissonance of contemporary life.
