Sha Shuang’s installation of vinyl wallpaper, couch, rug and lamp invites audiences to enter what seems a witty alternative version of an Ikea show-room display. She says: ‘My artistic explorations have been following the notion of “searching for standards.” I was very much interested in the act of “searching.” Much of the graphic materials for this installation came from Google and various websites that deals with the idea of “standards” or “standardisation” (including ergonomics, product design standards, etc.) Through setting up unique perspectival viewpoints, I assembled a model living room that showcases an “Order” of “Standards” that I created.’ Her use of grids, perspective drawing, text and tiny figures creates a sense that our lives are ordered by others, as if we in our messy humanity are contained and constrained within an engineer’s blueprint.
