Notes
In this loosely painted self-portrait, one of a series of the artist positioned at his easel, Zheng is depicted wearing a white hat, standing against a background of trees, with drips and dribbles of paint running down from his face onto his body. His body is a transparent outline, through which we see the earth and foliage behind him. His head has been defaced with red paint, applied with such vigour that it drips like a bleeding wound, mixing with the ochre dribbles that run down from his collar. The effect is of a damaged soul, gazing into the mirror with despair.
