Notes
In this pentaptych, a still life of pages that represent different historical periods, techniques, styles and categories of calligraphy, Chen Danqing reflects on the important tradition of ‘learning from the masters’, and of veneration for one’s artistic antecedents. He wittily also includes a reference to the tradition of the ‘Chun Gong’ (春宫) – erotic pictures of the type known in Japan as a ‘pillow book’ – on the right-hand side, together with the unfolded concertina of the Song or Yuan Dynasty shan shui painting at the bottom of the composition.
