A focus on memory characterises Li Yousong’s painting. Night 2017 draws our attention back to the 1970s, when a bicycle was a luxury for most Chinese families. The painting depicts the profile of an ordinary one-storey house in the Northeast China. The only furniture is a single bed and a two-drawer side table, squeezing to one side of the small, narrow room, while a bike is well kept indoors. A framed certificate of merit and a Model Worker silk banner are the only decorations on the white-and-green wall. Applying oil paints with a subtle palette, the artist depicts a nostalgic scenario that is unfamiliar to today’s audiences, referencing the dramatic changes that happened in recent Chinese history.
