Notes
Hu Weiyi’s intention with ‘Intersecting’ (which could also be translated as ‘Crossing the Border’ is to jolt audiences from the complacency of the everyday and the expected through startling combinations of visual imagery, light and sound. The space in the gallery is divided by vertical strings bearing sharp steel ‘thorns’ that are actually small lights. A controller causes them to switch on and off; when they are on, amplified high-frequency noise generated when electricity is run through one conductor to another is played. In combination with his work ‘Tentacles 2’ (also in White Rabbit Collection), photographs of flowers with arcs of ‘lightning’ running through them, the effect is disquieting. Hu says, ‘Applying disturbing noise as background sound, I intend to design a particular space that generates the atmosphere of ‘crossing the line’. Therefore, how an audience member’s body feel when they enter the room matters the most in this work. Their sensation should not be limited to vision.’
