Biography
Hu Weiyi, the son of pioneering new media artist Hu Jieming, was born in Shanghai, in 1990. He graduated from the China Academy of Art with a BA from the department of Public Art in 2013, concluding his studies with an MFA in the Inter-Media department in 2014, where video pioneer Zhang Peili was his advisor. A multimedia artist and curator, Hu Weiyi’s experimental work is influenced by social ethnography and art history. His work has been the subject of major museum solo shows, including Hu Weiyi, Asian Art Center, Taipei, Taiwan (2015) and No Express – Hu Weiyi, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China (2015). Other solo shows include The Window Blind (HdM GALLERY, Beijing, 2019), Intersecting (A+ Contemporary, Shanghai, 2018), Dialogue Between HU Weiyi and Yoshua OKÓN (Don Gallery + Ghebaly Gallery, Condo Shanghai , Shanghai, 2018) and Hu Jieming & Hu Weiyi - Imagination is Reality (ShanghART Singapore, Singapore, 2018). He has also exhibited in group shows including New voices: a dslcollection story, Klein Sun Gallery, New York, NY (2016); We – A Community of Chinese Contemporary Artists, Chi K11 Art Space, Shanghai, China (2016); Turning Point: Contemporary Art In China Since 2000, Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, China (2016); Familiar Otherness – Art Across Northeast Asia, Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong (2015) and Shanghai Ever, Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, China (2015). He won the Grand Jury Prize from the 2nd Huayu Youth Award at Art Sanya in 2014. Hu Weiyi lives and works in Shanghai.
