Chen thinks of his practice as creating ‘temporary temples’, ephemeral pop-up places of worship to enrapture his audience. In OM (2016), the sacred incantation found in Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain chants and texts is represented visually; the letters glow with LED lights like a neon advertising sign. Extreme states of spiritual euphoria are layered with his generation’s experience of the metropolis, a world away from the dreary realities of daily life in Beijing’s suburbs.
