Notes
For his large installations Liu gleans objects and materials from his immediate environment. He reassembles detritus found on building sites, such as metal piping, old timber window frames, doorways and architraves, as well as glass and steel, into complex architectural constructions, such as People 1 (2014), that mirror the cycle of demolition and reconstruction of Chinese cities. Liu Wei’s sprawling, city-like installations made up of the flotsam and jetsam of a world undergoing perpetual upheaval suggest the constant flux of the urban landscape. These works echo the constant demolition, destruction, and reconstruction of Beijing.
