Notes
Hsu Wei-Ying has developed a visual language incorporating her expertise in screen printing with Chinese traditions of gongbi painting and the Eastern Gouache techniques brought to Taiwan by the Japanese. In this series of works she depicts a nymph-like female figure who wears a bird’s nest on her head emerging from a stylised forest landscape. The delicate silver tracery of tree trunks, branches, reeds and foliage recalls photographic negatives or 19th century tintype or wet collodion print; it evokes a fairy tale landscape which might be inhabited by forest sprites and other mythical creatures.
