Notes
Fugue Island is one work from a larger series of installations based on the artist’s interest in classical music. A ‘fugue’ is a contrapuntal compositional technique usually comprising two or more voices, built on a subject (a musical theme) that is introduced at the beginning in imitation (repetition at different pitches) and which recurs frequently in the course of the composition. The work is in two parts, the cast bronze elements and the wooden bases, which represent the lengths of the notes in a particular fragment of a song, a rational geometric proportion. The bronze objects have been cast from real bamboo blossoms. The artist says: ‘When the flowers are in full bloom, the bamboo is coming to the end of its life. During the process of casting, we could not predict whether the flowers would be damaged or intact. The blooming and fading of flowers or the damage caused by the casting process became metaphors for the life cycle.’
