Gu Liang’s meticulously crafted works demonstrate his interest in the physicality of objects, which he represents using illusionistic techniques of light and shadow. Here, what appears at first to be an open pyramidal form, like two pastel-checked playing cards leaning against each other with a mirrored reflection inside its interior space, is in reality a five-sided shape, a clever, Escher-like optical illusion.
