Notes
In the 1990s in China, to purchase a ‘Phoenix’ brand bicycle was to own one of the first status symbols of consumer culture in the new market economy ushered in by Deng Xiaoping’s reforms. Feng Lianghong has painted spontaneously over the brand identification on the cardboard box that once encased a shiny new bicycle, leaving the logo at the top right corner like a colophon on a scroll painted by a literati master. Perhaps Feng is remembering the ‘Forever’ or ‘Phoenix’ brand bicycles that he has owned during his adolescence and youth during the years of China’s rapid transformation. The work is signed and dated in the bottom right-hand corner.
