Biography
Known as one of the pioneers of abstract painting in China, Feng Lianghong was born in Shanghai in 1962. He studied in the Shanghai Art & Crafts School and then enrolled in the Central Academy of Art & Design (now the Art Academy of Tsinghua University, Beijing), graduating in 1989. Like many other artists of his generation, Feng travelled to New York in 1990, living and working there for the next sixteen years before returning to China in 2006. Though Feng’s works are unequivocally in the style of western abstract expressionism, he absorbed influences from both western modern art movements and Chinese cultural tradition. Appling a Zen-like approach to his practice – emptying his mind and listening to the intuition –he fills canvases with a liberated palette and thick impasto pigment, combining painting techniques from the East and West to achieve a lush and lively surface. Among many significant exhibitions Feng participated in ‘China/Avant-Garde’, National Art Museum of China, Beijing (1989), ‘Global Roots: Chinese Artists in New York’, Purdue University, Indiana, USA (1998), ‘U.S and us’- ‘Chen Danqing, Ma Kelu, Feng Lianghong, Beijing (2007), ‘Shuffling the Cards: The 1st and 2nd Round Chinese Contemporary Art Reloaded’, Hipphalle Gmunden, Austria (2012 and 2013), and ‘Swatch Faces’, Venice Biennale, Italy (2015). His works are held in many private and public collections in China, Europe and the USA. Feng Lianghong currently lives and works in Beijing.
