Bi Rongrong’s abstract paintings fuse her studies of shan shui ink painting and gongbi painting (she completed a master’s degree in Chinese Painting at the Art College of Sichuan University) with the modernist abstract painting conventions she encountered during her second MFA in the Netherlands. During her studies at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen she was influenced by the strong traditions of Dutch design, including the work of Piet Mondrian and de Stijl artists and designers. On her return to China, Bi began to consider how this western visual syntax could be combined with her earlier immersion in Chinese landscape painting. In ‘It Happens In Time And Space 05/15’ we see this development in her mature work, with hints of landscape and architectural references – even suggestions of the urban palimpsest of graffiti and advertising imagery – emerging from between the swirls and calligraphic lines and zig zags. Like the apparently gestural and spontaneous mark-making of xie yi ink painting, Bi Rongrong’s joyful exuberance is carefully controlled.
