Notes
Hu Shengping’s visual language is one of materiality and altered states – he tears, shreds, embosses, burns and chars his paper installations. Charred marks, irregular cracks and raw textured surfaces are often seen in his works, in a process he as described as ‘morbid rage’. Hu Shengping's artistic vocabulary is so minimalist that the maker is almost absent, suggesting that the meaning of his work resides in its materiality. He says, 'A white paper is perfect for drawing the newest and prettiest picture, while a torn rag pulp does not require an artist's labour. It is self-being.'
