Biography
Born in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province in 1950, Hu Shengping studied at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and Nanjing University of the Arts from 1985 to 1987. Devoting himself to creating handmade paper artwork for over 30 years, he celebrates its materiality. Charred marks, irregular cracks and thick and raw textures are often seen in his works, which forms an aesthetic of roughness and simplicity. Hu Shengping's artistic vocabulary is so minimalist that the maker is almost absent, suggesting that the meaning of his work resides in its materiality. He says, 'A white paper is perfect for drawing the newest and prettiest picture, while a torn rag pulp does not require an artist's labour. It is self-being.' Hu Shengping's works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in China and internationally. He lives and works in Beijing.
