Notes
Chen Cheng-Hsun is interested in challenging stereotypical notions of ceramics as a craft for making utilitarian vessels. Trained as a sculptor, he juxtaposes the use of clay, which he sees as simply one among many sculptural media, with other materials, such as wood, stone, metal or rope. His forms are simple, almost primeval. Chen says that clay ‘complements the different qualities of water, wood, metal and stone, and through the firing process records the passage of time, allowing one to explore the structure of the universe and divine the meaning of life, to return to the original self, and seek harmony.’
