Biography
Born in 1957 in Changhua, Taiwan, Chen Cheng-Hsung trained as a sculptor in Taiwan before he studied ceramics in Spain, at the National Madrid Ceramic School. This unusual background has allowed him to challenge preconceptions and conventions relating to the medium of clay. He sees it simply as a medium for sculpture, and he aims to transcend the idea that this is merely a material for making utilitarian vessels. His work fuses the long Chinese tradition of working with clay with western developments such as ‘contemporary ceramics’. Chen’s work has been shown widely throughout Taiwan, and in Europe and Japan.
