Biography
Wu Chi-Tao was born in Tainan, Taiwan, in 1968. He graduated with a BA from the National Academy of Arts (now Taipei National University of the Arts) in 1993 and then attended graduate school at Tunghai University, graduating with an MA in Art Theory in 1998. He is currently teaching Chinese painting and calligraphy at both universities. Having spent a lifetime immersed in the traditions of Chinese painting and calligraphy, he has developed a deep knowledge of the intricacies of inks, paper and the techniques of Song and Ming Dynasty masters and has provided his expertise to the National Palace Museum, Taipei. Like a scholar painter in the imperial past Wu grinds his own ink from natural pigments such as malachite and cinnabar, mixed with deer-horn gelatin. Yet his delicate landscapes, while recalling shan shui ink paintings, reflect his sense of despair at the ravages human beings have wrought upon the natural world. His work has been shown widely in solo and group exhibitions in Taiwan, Mainland China and Japan. Wu Chi-Tao lives and works in New Taipei City.
