Biography
Born in 1978 in Jingmen, Hubei Province, Liu Chuang’s work integrates social intervention with institutional critique to examine China’s immediate realities, particularly the Shanzhai phenomenon of piracy and plagiarism in mass manufacturing and culture. Working across disciplines from video, installation and architecture to performance, Liu uses banal ready-mades and intervention techniques with a subtle, wry sensibility and an awareness of absurdity. His work has been exhibited widely internationally in solo and group exhibitions within and beyond China, including his major project Bitcoin Mining and Field Recordings of Ethnic Minorities at Protocinema, Istanbul, the Centre Pompidou, Paris in 2019. Work by Liu Chuang was selected for the Ural Biennale, Ekaterinburg, the Asian Art Biennial, Taichung (both 2019) and the Dhaka Art Summit, 2020. Previously his work was shown in international exhibitions including “Bentu, Chinese Artists In A Time Of Turbulence And Transformation”, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, France, 2016; Berlinale, The Berlin International Film Festival, Berlin, Germany, 2016; The 10th Gwangju Biennale: Burning Down the House, Gwangju, Korea, 2014; The 10th Shanghai Biennale: Social Factory, 2014; “My Generation: Young Chinese Artists”, Orange County Museum of Art, Orange County, California, USA. Liu Chuang lives and works in Beijing.
