Biography
Born in 1965 in Beijing, Hong Hao graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Art in 1989. His early works revealed an interest in cartography: he created maps that reflected aspects of Chinese history, philosophy and ideology. Later he turned to ‘mapping’ the tide of consumerism that swept through China as a result of Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms in the 1980s and 1990s. Hong Hao is a co-founder of the ‘Polit-Sheer-Form Office’ artists’ collective, together with Song Dong, Xiao Yu, Liu Jianhua and Leng Lin. His work has been exhibited widely in China and internationally, including, for example, ‘Art and China After 1989: Theater of the World’, at the Guggenheim Museum in 2017. In 2013 Hong was shortlisted for the 5th Prix Pictet, the global award in photography and sustainability. Hong Hao currently lives and works in Beijing.
