Biography
Born in 1978 in Tongjiang County, the northeast of Sichuan Province, Chen Ke was awarded her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2002 and 2005. Influenced by the pop culture aesthetic of comics and cartoons, Chen is most well-known for her cute protagonist: a little girl with a round nose and a pair of dreamy-and-sad looking eyes, who often appears in quirky, fairytale scenes rendered in a soft, delicate palette. She works across many media including painting, sculpture and installation reflecting on her life experience and the modern epidemic of loneliness and restlessness. She exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions within and beyond China, including ‘The Real Deal Is Talking With Dad’, YUZ Museum, Shanghai (2018-2019); ‘I Love Beijing New Wave’, Stargallery, Beijing (2019); ‘Reading the Raindrops-Western Artists Documenta’, Moca Yinchuan Gallery, Yinchuan (2017); ‘Dream . Dew’, Perrotin Gallery, Hong Kong (2016); ‘Chinese Whispers: Recent Art from the Sigg & M+ Sigg Collections’, Kunstmuseum Bern, Switzerland (2016); ‘Mirror and Shadow’, National Gallery of Indonesia, Indonesia (2013); and ‘Another Me in the World’, Kunsthaus Viernheim, Germany (2008), etc. Her work is held in public and private collections in China, Australia, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Italy. Chen Ke lives and works in Beijing.
