Biography
Chou Chu-Wang paints rocks and stones with ferocious concentration, rendering every detail of their dappled, weathered surfaces in an almost perversely painstaking form of hyper-realism. Using tiny brushes, stippling with the finest, most precise dots or tiny circles in a form of pointillism, he creates paintings that exude stillness and solemnity. Chou was born in 1978 in the coastal area of Pingtung, Taiwan, where he lives and works today. In 2000 he was awarded an MFA from National Kaohsiung Normal University. Selected solo exhibitions include ‘The Hours’, InArt Space, Tainan (2016); ‘Embrace Moments’, InArt Space, Tainan (2013); ‘I am a NAUGHTY BOY’, Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2011) and ‘Point ∞─ Between Alpha and Omega’, InArt Space, Tainan (2010). Chou has participated in group exhibitions throughout Taiwan as well as Macau; Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan; Busan, Korea; and Beijing, China. Chou’s work is held in the collections of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum; National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts; Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts; Cultural Affairs Bureaus of both Tainan and Pingtung County Governments; Union Culture and Art Foundation and Chimei Museum. Awards include the 21st Chi-Mei Arts Exhibition Award (2009), the Taipei Fine Arts Award Grand Prize (2007) and the Kaohsiung Arts Award (2003).
