Biography
Conceptual artist Li Yongzheng was born in a remote village in rural Sichuan Province in 1971, but his parents relocated to the city so that he could attend school. Always interested in art, he studied oil painting at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, graduating in 1991, and then graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of Southwest University (formerly Southwest Normal University) in 1994. For many years after graduating, he concentrated on developing businesses and working in advertising. From 1998 to 2000 he attended workshops at the Department of Sociology of Sichuan University while living and working in Chengdu, Sichuan. His interest in western and Buddhist philosophy, as well as social issues in a society undergoing seismic change due to unstoppable forces of globalisation and urbanisation, underpins his mature work, which takes various forms including sculpture, time-based media, performance and installation. Li Yongzheng’s work has been shown widely in solo and group exhibitions within and beyond China, including most recently in ‘Red Ruins, Absurd Realities: Artworks by Li Yongzheng’ at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts, Taipei (2018). He lives and works in Chengdu.
