Biography
Born in 1970 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, Zhou Zixi now lives and works in Shanghai. In 1988 Zhou was studying literature at Jiangxi Normal University in Nanchang, but after the traumatic events of June 1989, he decided that ‘the language of literature was no longer useful’. Zhou started afresh, studying painting at East China Normal University, in Shanghai. Since graduating in 1992, his work has been shown widely, in solo exhibitions in Shanghai and Zurich, and in group shows within and beyond China, including the 11th Shanghai Biennale in 2016, and Newtopia: The State of Human Rights in Mechelen, Belgium, in 2012. Zhou Zixi’s examines traumatic memory, the attempted erasure of history, and uncomfortable slippages between the past and the present.
