Biography
Wang Haoliang was born in far North-eastern China, in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, in 1990. He was admitted to study in the Mural Painting department of the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, graduating in 2013 with a master’s degree. At CAFA Wang studied under artist Sun Tao, who had been trained in the traditional Soviet style of realist painting at the Repin Academic Institute of Fine Arts (formerly the Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts). Because of Sun Tao’s training in this highly academic Russian tradition, Wang received a thorough grounding in all aspects of technique, but Sun also inspired him to explore the possibilities of mixed media and appropriation. Wang has developed his own approach, a collage-like juxtaposition of styles and imagery, often appropriated from the art historical canon. His work has been shown in group exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Guangzhou. Wang Haoliang lives and works in Beijing.
