Born in Xi’an, Shaanxi, and trained at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, photomedia and video artist Bai Ye is one of the earliest pathfinders and organizers of Xi'an Textile Town Art District, a contemporary art district of studios, galleries and exhibition and performance spaces. Bai Ye's photographs and videos are made with his mobile phone and often feature abandoned buildings, anonymous figures and nondescript urban landscapes, further abstracted to become ambiguous compositions of colour and light. Between 2013 and 2016, Bai held two solo exhibitions: ‘Bu Ke Di Da Zhi Guang/Unapproachable Light: Bai Ye & Cheng Qainning’ and ‘Zhi Xiang Sheng Fen/Disjunctures Between Knowledge System and Truth Of The World’ at Beijing Telescope (artist studio). In 2017, he organised a two-year-long art residency project ‘Zheng Zhuang Kong Jian’ and held two exhibitions ‘Li Xiang Guo’ and ‘Ye Jin’. Bai Ye’s work includes performance art, video art, installation and painting; he emphasises the physical presence of a specific time, location and space, and the connection between the physical and metaphysical realms. Bai Ye lives and works in Xi’an.
