Biography
Born in Beijing in 1968, into a family of generations of artists, Cheng Dapeng graduated from the Architecture Department of Tianjin University in 1990, and now has his own successful architecture studio, working on major public and private commissions. His 2D and 3D works have focused on the city as a fake fantasyland, a place of surreal juxtapositions and hybrid life forms. ‘Wonderful Wonderland’, his solo exhibition at Beijing’s Today Art Museum in 2012, presented Cheng’s response to China’s rapid urbanisation, the proliferation of dramatic ‘statement’ buildings, and the ubiquitous copying of western architectural styles. Chen Dapeng lives and works in Beijing.
