Biography
Born in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, in 1969, Tu Wei Cheng obtained his M.F.A. at Tainan National College of Arts in 2005. He resides and practices today in Taipei. His 2011 artwork "Bu Num Civilization Revealed," serves as a poignant exploration of deception and the fleeting nature of contemporary society. This work was followed by his creation, "Happy Valentine's Day!!," inspired by a serendipitous observation during his time at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. In this piece, Cheng delves into the complexities of China-Taiwan relations, embodying the intricate interplay of love and hate within their intricate association. Central to Cheng's artistry is a commentary on the profound influence of the internet and technology on human existence, where he envisions a personal utopia within the digital realm. Cheng's installations cleverly meld modern tech symbols with ancient aesthetics, a theme he's explored within museums since 2007, playing multiple roles as creator, curator, and artist. His work invites viewers on a journey, blurring the boundaries of time and reality while encouraging introspection within the intersection of technology, culture, and humanity.
