Biography
Jun Chen was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province in 1960. When the universities re-opened after the Cultural Revolution, he enrolled to study Chinese painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, one of a class of only ten students. He later migrated to Australia in 1990, and he was awarded a master’s degree from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane in 1996. In China, Chen was a brush and ink painter; in Australia he reinvented himself as an oil painter using paint thickly applied with a palette knife and working across many genres including landscape, portraits, nudes and still life painting. Like other contemporary artists from China, he has also investigated the possibilities of working with porcelain, exemplified by the two works in the White Rabbit Collection. Ju Chen lives and works in Brisbane.
