Biography
Wang Jiuliang is a Chinese artist and activist known for his photography that exposes the environmental consequences of urbanization and consumerism in China. Born in 1977 in Anqiu, Shandong Province, he studied photography and communication at the University of China. Wang's documentary series, 'Beijing Besieged by Waste' (2008-2010), documented over 450 landfill sites surrounding Beijing, shedding light on the extensive waste pollution. His work received recognition, including awards at the Pingyao and Lianzhou International Photography Festivals. Wang's photographs reveal the blighted farmland, streets filled with rubbish, and massive piles of garbage, serving as a call to action against consumerism and its detrimental impact. Despite the challenging subject matter, Wang remains optimistic and strives for change, utilizing his art as a means of activism and raising awareness.
