Biography
Cao Hui was born in 1968 in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in south-western China. He has a BA and MA in sculpture from the Yunnan Art Institute and the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) respectively. Today he lives in Beijing and works at his alma mater (CAFA) as a teacher of sculpture. Since 1998 his work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Beijing and Taipei. This artist is known for his monumental sculptures, which highlight cruelty to animals eg flayed horses, etc. Typically, his works combine beauty and violence and show the ‘truth’ behind what we eat and wear. Cao Hui is a vegan - unusual for a Chinese person in a country populated overwhelmingly by those known to eat ‘anything with its back to the sun.’
