Biography
Chen Ping was born in Shantou, Guangdong Province, in southern China, in 1962. His early talent ensured he was accepted into the affiliated high school of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1985 he graduated from the prestigious Guangzhou Academy with a bachelor’s degree in art education. He moved to Sydney, Australia, in 1990 and then to Tasmania where he studied painting at the School of Art, University of Hobart, graduating with a BFA (Painting) in 1997. His work has been shown widely throughout Australia and internationally, with recent solo shows in Hobart (2019); Sydney (2018), Beijing (2017); ‘Zen Flies Over’, Singapore High Commission, Singapore (2014) and in Hobart, Sydney, Los Angeles, New York and Hong Kong in 2012. Among his awards, grants and prizes are the Arts Tasmania Grant in 2008, 2014 and 2016. In 2014 his Unseen Mountain was the official gift of the Tasmanian Government to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan. Chen Ping’s work is held in numerous public and private collections. He lives and works in Hobart.
