Biography
Born in Chongqing in 1966, at the start of the Cultural Revolution, Du Xia entered the famous Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in Chongqing in the mid-1980s, when the winds of change were blowing throughout China, in the art world as in every other part of society. Trained in the highly academic Sichuan painting techniques (one of his teachers was Zhang Xiaogang) Du Xia’s signature character is a bald, stern-faced man with stubble on his cheeks and chin that appears more like nails than facial hair. Depicted in bleak interior spaces they evoke existential despair.
