Biography
Bingyi Huang (who prefers to go by the name Bingyi) was born in 1975 in Beijing. Her training as an art historian informs her self-taught painting practice. A true polymath, she began to paint only in recent years, following her studies in biomedical engineering and art history. Bingyi attended Mount Holyoke College, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in 1998 before undertaking her MA at Yale (2001), and finally a PhD in art and archaeology at Yale in 2005. Her doctoral dissertation was based on her study of the Han Dynasty, and her deep knowledge of Chinese art and literature underpins every aspect of her practice. Bingyi’s paintings and installations have been shown in the United States, Korea, Spain, Belgium, Canada and Hong Kong, as well as in group and solo exhibitions in China. Recent major exhibitoins and installation/performance projects include Inside the Wall, Alvaro Alcazar, Madrid, Spain (2015); Epoché, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, Shenzhen, China (2014); Gestalt of the Wind, St. Johannes-Evangelist-Kirche, Berlin, Germany (2012) and Cascade, Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, Chicago, USA (2010). Bingyi lives and works in Beijing.
