Biography
Fu Xiaotong, born in 1976 in the mountainous region of Shanxi province, China, is a Beijing-based artist known for her unique use of handmade Xuan paper and needle piercing techniques. Inspired by the natural beauty and sense of awe she experienced growing up in the secluded mountain terrains, Fu found her artistic voice through the influence of her mother, as well as renowned artists, poets, writers, philosophers, and psychologists. During her studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), under the guidance of Wu Jian'an, she developed a deep appreciation for Xuan paper and chose it as her primary medium. By meticulously piercing thousands of holes in the paper, Fu creates images that reveal the inherent beauty of the material itself, emphasizing a focus on the language of materials and the absence of interference. Although she doesn't adhere to any religious beliefs, Fu acknowledges a belief in mystical power, which she seeks to express through her art, considering the creative process as a form of spiritual practice.
