Biography
Painter and New Media artist Zhang Xiaotao was born in 1970 in Hechuan, Sichuan Province ( a former county-level city which is now part of the megacity of Chongqing). Zhang graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1996. He taught at Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu between 1996 and 2009. In 2010 he co-founded the New Media Department at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Chongqing, where he continues to teach. He began doctoral research at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2013, where Xu Bing was his advisor. Zhang Xiaotao’s work has been widely shown internationally, including solo shows in Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Israel, Spain, France, Germany, Lithuania, Norway and the USA. Significant curated group exhibitions include the 6th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Moscow, Russia; ‘Screen Play: Life In An Animated World’ Albright Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY,USA (both 2015); ‘Echo – Multidimensional Traditions of Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition’, Hamburg Art Museum, Hamburg, Germany; ‘Liquid Culture’ - China & Korea New Media Art Exhibition, Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea (both 2014). His work was selected for the China Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013). Zhang Xiaotao lives and works in Beijing.
