Biography
Yang Jiechang was born in 1956 in Foshan, Guangdong Province, but since 1989 he has lived and worked between Paris and Heidelberg, in Germany. Between 1974 and 1978 he studied paper-mounting, folk art and Chinese painting at the Foshan Folk Art Research Institute, and then continued his study of Chinese painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1982. Between 1982 and 1988 Yang taught in the same Chinese painting department. Since his participation in the seminal China/Avant-garde exhibition in Beijing in 1989 Yang’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions in China and across the globe, including in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia. His work has been seen in significant group exhibitions including Magiciens de la Terre, at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, in 1989; the 50th Venice Biennale (2003); the Istanbul Biennial (2007); Reactivation – Shanghai Biennale (2012), Ink Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China, Metropolitan Museum, New York (2013) and Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World, Guggenheim Museum, New York (2017).
