Biography
Born in the prefecture-level city of Bozhou, Anhui Province, Li Shuguang studied oil painting at Anhui Provincial Art School, graduating in 1981, and then after a few years working at a magazine he attended the Central Academy of Art and Design (now affiliated with Tsinghua University) and graduated in 1987. He has worked as art director at the upmarket women’s magazine “Rui Li” Za Zhi since 1999, continuing to paint in both western and Chinese techniques. He deliberately links his work in fashion and style with his art practice, identifying a connection between the two in defiance of outmoded notions that ‘high art’ is distinct from popular culture. Li Shuguang’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions in Beijing, Singapore and Taipei, and in group shows in Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Switzerland and the United States. He lives and works in Beijing.
